Lughnasa or Lughnasadh is a Celtic Cross Quarter Holiday, celebrated between the Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox. It is a harvest festival sometimes celebrated at the time of the "first fruits". This festival has some uncertainties about it. The Celtic God Lugh was said to start or be honored at Lughnasa with athletic games, feasts and celebration of the harvest. There is a connection with this festival to the death of the Earth Goddess or the death of Lugh's foster mother, who died of exhaustion preparing the fields across Ireland.
The first Harvest festival of the year takes place on August 1st, or the midway point between Summer and Autumn.
Our Lughnasa Candle combines Lavender, Woodsmoke and a hint of Sage. Lavender represents devotion, harmony, luck and protection. We felt this gives nod to Lugh's devotion to his foster mother, or the Earth Goddess and also protection for the harvest season. The woodsmoke is for both Lugh (Patron of Blacksmiths, God of craftsmen, warriors and the Sun among many other things) and for the fires of the celebration.
