They would blend herbs for scent but also knew their medicinal properties. They built themselves the Plague Doctor masks we know now, stuffed them full of just the right combination of herbs, and were able to enter homes of people suffering with the plague and rob them of their goods. The tale goes many ways, they were caught and gave up their secret recipe to the doctors to be freed, they were never caught and the doctors created their own blends in similar masks, you know how the game of telephone works. Whatever the truth may be- its a fun tale!
