This is Hexenhaus: a scent spun from storybook sugar, shadowed hearths and strange tales. The air is thick with spice... ginger, clove, and the golden warmth of vanilla.
Hexenhaus has two distinct meanings in German culture: one rooted in fairytale, the other in historical persecution. It can evoke to the enchanted witch cottage fragrant with gingerbread and sugar, or to the grim witch prisons used during the German witch trials.
In folklore and popular imagination, Hexenhaus (German for “witch’s house”) evokes the edible lebkuchen cottage from Hansel and Gretel. (A house made of gingerbread, cake, and sugar.) The idea of witches living in candy covered homes predates the Grimm Brothers and reflects older cultural beliefs about temptation and magic.
On a darker note, in the annals of German history, Hexenhaus was also something far more harrowing. Hexenhaus was a name used for witch prisons during the German witch trials of the 17th century. Midwives, herbalists, the wise and the wild were held during the German witch trials. These prisons were part of a broader system of persecution, where hundreds were executed under suspicion of witchcraft.
Our inspiration for our Hexenhaus perfume is the forest bound witch houses of German lore that inspired the Grimm brothers. To ancient Germanic tribes (and many European peoples), the witch was a seer and healer, often dwelling in sacred groves.
The tie of sugar and spice to the wise witches of German woods was two fold: they often were herbalists and healers- working with nature and what was available to heal their community. It is also a symbol of abundance and growth as sugar and spices were not as easily accessible as they are today- to have sugar and spices was to have wealth and power.
Our Hexenhaus perfume is comfort and curiosity.
Rich vanilla, spiced sweetness, and warm gingerbread whispers.
