What is Smudging?
Smudging is the ancient practice of burning plant materials to purify a space. It has been performed in various cultures globally for centuries. Traditionally, it involved using smoke to clear 'bad air' from a dwelling, either through a tightly bound bundle or stick of herbs or by burning incense and resins. The specific plants used varied based on regional availability.
The earliest known use of smudging has been found in Egypt through ancient texts and recovered artifacts, where they used a combination of herbs and resins.
The most well known smudging tool, originally used by Native Americans is sage. You may find Native Americans burning cedar, tobacco, and other items within their sage bundles.
Throughout Europe you’d find lavender, rosemary, pine, juniper, mugwort, and other abundant plant material.
Evidence has been found in Greece, that Thyme was the herb of choice for smudging there.
In Hinduism, Dhoop cups, which are charcoal cups filled with a resin, are the smudge of choice.
Smudging has played an important role in ceremonial practices, globally.
How to Smudge?
Smudging involves burning the end of a bundle of herbs or incense to produce purifying smoke. This smoke can be used to clear negative energies from a space, an object, or oneself. While sage is commonly used for smudging, other herbs like mugwort are chosen for additional benefits such as protection, good luck, and enhanced intuition. Burning mugwort during meditation can help release everyday stresses, or during divination practices to open the third eye, connect with the spiritual realm, or for protective purposes.
The addition of any herb is believed to contribute its benefits to the cleansing ritual.
